13^th RESPECT FESTIVAL

Global musicians featured at this year’s 13^th annual Plymouth Respect Festival, which took place Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th October at Plymouth Guildhall.

The packed line-up delivered a rich mix of music, cultures and experiences that the Plymouth Respect Festival is famed for.

This year the event kicked off with Rhythms 4 Respect, an evening of dance and music, on Saturday 29^th October. Salsa dance fun got people warmed up and live music from Salsa, African and Ska bands kept them on their toes.

Sunday saw the return of the Respect Parade which started at 10am by the Sundial. The parade coordinated by Barefoot, was led by a Samba band and included children from 7 Plymouth schools (Beechwood Primary, High Street Primary, Holy Cross RC Primary, Lipson Community College, Oakwood Primary, Riverside Primary School + Barne Barton Residents Art Group, Victoria Road Primary), as well as Emerge Circus Group and UCP Marjon International Students.

To compliment this event there had been banner and costume workshops led by Stiltskin and funded by Devon And Somerset Fire Service and Affinity Sutton Housing. The theme of the parade this year was Fire and Heat.

This year's Respect Festival was full of colour, energy, culture and music. A great atmosphere and a great experience for everyone to enjoy. The free family event included live music performances from Pearl of Africa Children's Choir, which was uplifting and beautiful to watch, plus stalls, performances, workshops, info stands, world food, coffee shop, activities for children and much, much more.

The Plymouth Respect Festival is an important event in the city’s calendar for highlighting diversity and celebrating differences. A spin-off strand of events is called Respect 4 Respect – with events and shows throughout the year to demonstrate the wide-reaching effects of the Festival. ‘RESPECT FOR RESPECT’

Dear all,

The Plymouth Respect Festival is to take a well earned year out in 2010

After 12 years of running Plymouth’s largest, most vibrant, most celebrated, free community event in the heart of the city, it has been decided that it’s now time to move Respect to the next level. This year we will take time to review, reflect and plan the long term journey for the event and to revisit its roots, and its rationale.

From its humble beginnings, the Respect Festival now attracts in excess of 20000 people annually, of all ages, ethnic backgrounds and cultures.

When the Festival began in 1998 did we ever think that it would grow into such a large and treasured event for the city?

Over its twelve years Respect has grown from a one day celebration to a weekend of festivities with associated Respect for Respect activities and events

We feel that Respect has massive scope and untapped potential to work its magic throughout the City and the region, throughout the course of the year and not just in October.

The Community will remain at the heart of Respect and we would love to hear from you on your thoughts and stories of Respect, you can e-mail us at dan@plymouthrespectfestival.co.uk

This decision has not been taken lightly but with a good deal of heart searching and a genuine desire to revitalise and enhance the event and widen the opportunities within it, for everyone.

The date of the next Plymouth Respect Festival will be October 29^th/30^th 2011.

HOW TO GET TO PLYMOUTH

By car from London: Plymouth is 238 miles west of London via the M4, M5 and A roads. It takes about 4 1/2 hours to drive.

By car from Cornwall: follow A38 to Plymouth; cross the Tamar Bridge and follow City Centre signs.

By train: Intercity Railway Station

By Bus: Book National Express Bus

PARKING

Parking for people with disabilities who are attending the festival is available at the Guildhall Car Park, Mayflower West Car Park and the Civic Centre Car Park.

Blue badge holders can park free in any space whether specifically identified for blue badge holders or not, except in the new Theatre Royal Car Park. Some car parks do have a time limit on the length of stay. Users should check signs in the car park.

The Line-up

This year's line-up includes:

Zumba for Respect - Saturday 29th October (Free)

Clare Batten of Zumba Zone will be running the session at 2pm, the Civic Piazza, in front of Plymouth Guildhall . This is a free Zumba session for any age or ability.

Rhythms 4 Respect - Plymouth Guildhall - Saturday 29th October (£5)

5pm-6pm: Salsa Dance Fun

A salsa lesson for those of us who love to dance.

6pm - 11pm: Live bands

Salsa, African and Ska music provided by Siga La Salsa, Chimanimani and Too Hot

Licensed bar and food available throughout the night.

Plymouth Respect Festival - Plymouth Guildhall - Sunday 30th October (FREE)

10am - 11am: Sunday Samba Parade

Colourful samba parade with Crooked Tempo, leading the way through the City Centre. Parade starts from the sundial at 10am.

11am - 4pm: Respect Festival

The free family event run by Plymouth and Devon Racial Equality and produced by Kaos Productions. Festival includes live music performances including: Pearl of Africa Children's Choir, plus stalls, workshops, information stands, world food available, coffee shop, play area, activities for children.......and much much more!

11am – Crystal, performing Traditional Berber Dance

11.15am – DancePerformance by the Greek School

11.25am - Renee Phippen - Bollywood Dance

11.30am – MilenaRewinska – Polish singer

11.45am – Michael BrianHarris – Devon Music Collective

12pm - Ricky Romain +Jon Sterk – Sitar and Tabla

2pm - Pearl of Africa Children's Choir

Fatima's Tent

Fatima’s Tent will be at the festival to highlight this unique project, which is used to promote a positive attitude to diversity, in particular around Islamic and Middle Eastern cultures, within Plymouth communities and schools. We will be doing a silk painting workshop all day on Sunday the 30^thof October in the marquee, making cushions for the tent.

The workshops are fun and informative and are designed to tie in with key elements of the national curriculum and the individual communities we visit.

“Fatima’s Tent was a magical experience as was the food tasting, storytelling and arts and crafts, which culminated in a wonderful and memorable day. I will be inviting the team back to work with the rest of the school” Kim Dorian-Kemp, Head Teacher, High View Primary School, Efford
